Discover Cornwall in the Shoulder Season: Why Autumn is the Perfect Time for a Staycation

When you think of Cornwall, the first image that comes to mind is often golden beaches and sun-soaked summer days. But for those in the know, Cornwall's magic doesn't fade with the changing seasons. In fact, visiting during the shoulder season—between summer and winter—has a very unique charm. For couples and families seeking a memorable staycation, autumn in Cornwall is a time of peaceful coastal beauty, vibrant events, and a wealth of things to do in peace and tranquility, without the hustle and bustle of peak summer crowds.

Why Visit Cornwall in Autumn?

Breathtaking Scenery, Without the Crowds...

Imagine exploring picturesque harbours, rugged cliffs, and miles of golden sand with plenty of space to breathe. In autumn, Cornwall’s natural beauty is still in full bloom, but with fewer tourists around, you can enjoy it in peace. The weather often remains mild, making it ideal for coastal walks, beach picnics, or simply soaking up the serenity of the countryside.

Great Value for Money

One of the best reasons to visit in the shoulder season is the fantastic value you can get on accommodation. At Select Cornwall, our holiday lets are more affordable outside of the peak season, meaning you can experience luxury stays for less. Plus, many attractions and restaurants offer off-season discounts, so your money stretches further.

Vibrant Local Events

Cornwall doesn’t slow down in autumn. In fact, the shoulder season is packed with exciting festivals, live music, and cultural experiences that showcase the region’s creativity and spirit. Whether you're a foodie, a music lover, or looking for family-friendly fun, there’s something for everyone.

What’s the weather like in Cornwall in September?

The days are still warm, though you may feel you need to start the day in a jumper, that quickly wears off once the sun makes an appearance. The ocean is at its warmest all year, so if you love water sports and swimming you will love visiting at this time and may choose not to wetsuit up. Make the most of the last bit of summer now the school holiday crowds have left. The beaches are at their most peaceful.

Top Places to Visit in Cornwall During Autumn

St. Ives

St. Ives is a must-visit, and autumn is a fantastic time to explore its art galleries, beaches, and charming cobbled streets. Without the peak season crowds, you can enjoy the town’s artistic vibe and even catch the St Ives September Festival. Expect live music, arts, crafts, and local food. We love St Ives for it’s year round buzz, unlike some parts of Cornwall which are more remote and die down once visitors have left.

Newquay

Known for its surf culture, Newquay is perfect for those who want to keep active during their staycation. Surf schools are still running through the autumn, and you’ll have a better chance of catching those perfect waves with fewer people in the water. The water is also at its warmest, having had some summer sunshine! Don’t forget to check out the Newquay Fish Festival on 7th September. Newquay, like St Ives, boasts a year round buzz and a bustling town centre, which even after the busy Summer season continues to stay open and remain buzzy.
